Lists of best films are daft, personal, unfair and totally unjustifiable, but, in no particular order, here are the five I've liked/admired most:
There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson) Overblown, operatic, flawed, mesmeric from start to finish, I adored this film. Daniel Day-Lewis is terrifying as Daniel Plainview, the ultimate self-made, self-destroyed man, as free enterprise and religion vie for C20th America's soul. Anderson's talents have never quite go to me before, now I'm smitten. At times sound, images and ideas come together so perfectly you're breathless. |
