In my day the only teen films featured Hayley Mills looking puppyish, Cliff going off on his Summer Holiday or, a slight improvement, the Beatles being self-consciously zany. No wonder we all went crazy in the summer of 68. This film, while it, like its title, tells it like it is, in fact turns out to be both funny and quite sweet as well as occasionally hormonally basic.

I haven't seen such an unpleasant, misanthropic film in quite a while. Jennifer Lynch may have some of her father's dark touch, but she has none of his mystery, humour or spirit. It's totally empty, unmitigated nastiness with no purpose. Plunging us deep into an uncomfortably sadistic and nightmarish scenario, we are presented with serial killings being ‘investigated' by a loathsome band of corrupt small town cops, and I think you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Films of the year

ImageLists of best films are daft, personal, unfair and totally unjustifiable, but, in no particular order, here are the five I've liked/admired most:

There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson) Overblown, operatic, flawed, mesmeric from start to finish, I adored this film. Daniel Day-Lewis is terrifying as Daniel Plainview, the ultimate self-made, self-destroyed man, as free enterprise and religion vie for C20th America's soul. Anderson's talents have never quite go to me before, now I'm smitten. At times sound, images and ideas come together so perfectly you're breathless.
