Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Berlin PDF Print E-mail

ImageI recently wrote about Jet, after having the misfortune to listen to one of their latest attempt at music. Here are a band who, in terms of principles, are very similar to Jet. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are all about the heavy rock songs, with influences from Oasis and Primal Scream, and they are normally decked out in their cool leather jackets and scruffy yet very cool hair cuts, like Jet. Fortunately for BRMC, the similarities with Jet end when it comes to musical ability.

Unlike Jet, BRMC are a good solid rock band, and although they certainly aren't changing the face of music as we know it, they have done enough over the last few years to earn a reputation as a band capable of producing decent tunes. Enjoyable rock songs are this bands forte, and with Berlin they certainly don't let anybody down.

Taken from new album Baby 81, it rattles along, practically forcing the listener into tapping their feet, or finger or anything they have to hand. Robert Levon Been vocal's are fine, with a sound reminiscent of Bobby Gillespie (in fact, the whole song sounds similar to an on-form Primal Scream), whilst the sheer sing-along-ability (is that even a proper phrase?) detracts from the slightly suspect lyrics. It is practically impossible to listen to the song and not start chanting along with the band.

And this is where BRMC excel, writing songs which has their listeners completely rocking out. As I said before, BRMC are by no means reinventing the wheel musically, however they have come up with a very impressive rock song in Berlin, the type which will have the kids on indie night doing air guitar and singing along to the words with their eyes shut (or at least, that's what I do). And for a band which I originally had marked as a companion piece to Jet, that is certainly some achievement.
