Envy and Other Sins - Highness PDF Print E-mail

ImageThere are plenty of lazy sorts out there who enjoy spending their Sunday mornings spread out on the couch and watching the delights of T4, including such illuminating programmes as The Hills, Friends repeats and, of course, the Hollyoaks omnibus. They will also have seen Mobile Act Unsigned, which was a sort of ‘Pop Idol' with bands. The winners were Envy and Other Sins, and this is their debut single.

‘Highness' starts with intense guitars booming out before the vocals kick, softly spoken rather than sung which completely throws you after you've been expecting a big rock voice. In terms of genre, it's quite hard to define them. At times they sound very heavy rock, like Muse (especially at songs introduction) but throughout the three and a half minute running time it eventually develops into a rather typical indie song.

Fortunately, it is quite impressive, surprisingly. It's easy to expect that, from a TV talent show, the band would be rubbish, however Highness is definitely worth a listen, and if the subsequent album can continue to progress, Envy and Other Sins will avoid going down the Michelle Mcmanus route of ‘won a talent show, but was shit at everything else'. Which would be nice for them.
