Burning Pilot - Cold Caller PDF Print E-mail

ImageI'm sure everybody gets that feeling from time to time. You know the one, the feeling of deep-seated regret that gets the better of us all, moulding us into the modern day Hamlet. Well, ever since I started listening to Burning Pilot, that feeling has overwhelmed me to the extent where without actually meeting lead singer Mark Smith, I get the sense that we wouldn't get on too well.
Perhaps I'm being too harsh on the band; they do have their merits. Their brave approach to the band's music has gained my respect, despite their seeming mismatch of electro-pop and ska genres which at times leaves me waking up in a cold sweat at 3am.

‘Burning Pilot's' new album, ‘Cold Caller', presents the best and worst of the band through the ten tracks on offer. Catchy tracks ‘Accelerate' and ‘International Poster Campaign' are without doubt the superlative tracks on the album. Their final track, in particular, is comparable to the Kaiser Chiefs hit ‘Every Day I Love You Less and Less' in rhythm and style, though it's unlikely Burning Pilot will ever reach the dizzy heights of the Leeds based band. The track ‘Cold Caller' also proves that the band have the potential to release a solid electro-pop album in the future, if only they presented all of their tracks in a similar style.

Overall, ‘Cold Caller' is a failure. The underlying monotony in their tracks tempts you to stop listening after the third track and, despite their success in providing original sounding music, the failings of their lead singer undermines their efforts. He simply cannot sing. Sorry Mr Smith.
