In 2008, after seventeen long years of waiting, Guns
N' Roses finally, finally released their first bit of new material since 1991's
simultaneous release of Use Your Illusion Parts 1 and 2. ‘Chinese Democracy',
one of the most anticipated albums in rock history, came out with a, well it
was more of a whimper, than any bang normally associated with the band. See, in
those seventeen years, something happened. Some things changed, and Guns N'
Roses became irrelevant.
‘Better', the latest single to be lifted from that eagerly
awaited album is more of the same, but less of the same. Put simply, the song
is everything you'd expect from the band; just not that good. Maybe it has
become tiresome; maybe they have outstayed their welcome. Or maybe, just maybe,
in those seventeen years the Guns N' Roses song formula, as well as their overall
sound, has become stale and dated.
At times it sounds disjointed and at times just a bit
all over the place. The glam and the over the top guitar solos haven't changed
at all, Axl Rose even manages to still sound like a constipated squirrel. For a
band supposedly refreshed and recharged, the track sounds disappointingly dull
and clichéd. The real shame here though, is that in another 17 years time, Guns
N' Roses won't be remembered with that same sense of myth and mystery as before
the release of ‘Chinese Democracy.' Instead, they'll just be a band who got
older and lost it. Which is a shame really.
