Johnny Cash has often been cited as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Well known for his distinctive bass-baritone voice his influences spanned country, rock and roll, blues, folk and gospel. A natural rebel The Man in Black wrote and played right up to his death in 2003. His best known songs include I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire and Man in Black among many, many others, all of which were, at the time of recording, or have been since huge hits.
His tumultuous love affair with June Carter was well documented in the 2005 film Walk The Line starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and the pair often performed a duet of their crowd-pleasing number - Jackson. A live version of this song appears on the DVD.

Johnny Cash fans may well already have much of this material already in their personal collections, however this set is worth purchasing for the footage from San Quentin prison that had not been seen previously (as far as I'm aware). It's a real treat and well worth watching.
Personally I only really began to enjoy the work of Cash after seeing the 2005 film biopic of his life and career, so I'm fairly new to his work and songs. And for a new fan of The Man in Black there is certainly plenty to keep me listening and watching this set over and over again. It's also, certainly considering that this is footage from several decades ago, very good quality sound and images.
Johnny Cash: An American Legend is a fitting tribute to this well-known and well-loved singer/songwriter, who despite troubles in his life, clearly always gave everything to his songs, his performances and his fans.
