Following the Libertines' revolution with anything headline-worthy was always going to be a challenge, but of the band-remainders I always suspected Carl Barat would have the greatest chance of producing something worthwhile. Unfortunately, the only thing I got from seeing Dirty Pretty Things last Thursday is exactly how much of the Libertine's magic didn't come from Barat. They were tight but there was no trace of originality or spark, which just left them sounding like a 'Libertines-wannabe' school band.
I find it quite sad that DPT have recieved so much exposure in comparison to Yeti (Lib bassist's venture- http://www.yetiintelligence.com/yeti.html) who are infinitely more deserving and also have more in the way of long-term potential. Carl being the more famous of the two ex band members just shows the power of celebrity media-hype... I must confess that I only stayed two or three songs in to their set, but they were so bland after having heard the end of support band Humanzi that there didn't seem any point in giving them a second chance. Alot of people felt sorry for Carl Barat at the Libertines demise, I just feel sorry for all those poor bastards who wasted their hard-earned actually buying a DPT ticket. www.dirtyprettythingsband.com |
